Here's an interesting post on comic book art that's been making the rounds. This related discussion, incidentally, reminds me of my Intellectual Property class's study of Barnhart. Our professor brought in foam shirt forms as examples and spent a non-trivial portion of the period waving a disembodied female torso around.
