To sleep, perchance
Sleep is the new sex, some say. But others eagerly await the creation of drugs that will make several daily hours of sleep unnecessary and allow us to be more productive. I love sleeping (mostly because I enjoy dreaming immensely). If the pharmaceutical companies do develop mainstream medications to reduce the need for daily sleep, will sleepers be the new drug addicts, shunned and scorned for their selfishly wasted potential? At least one book addresses something like this division between the sleepless and the sleepers, but making sleep optional rather than inborn would produce different results than the author postulated.
