I always think of accepting someone as an expert through questioning that reveals their expertise (rather than based on a resume) as the "My Cousin Vinny" method. In the doctor's case, it can be really questionable when someone doesn't want to give their daughter penicillin because they hear it has trace amounts of mercury or something like that.
